Publicists: It’s Time to Embrace the

Technology of Online Press Kits

So you have a cell phone, a Palm Pilot, an automated office complete with teleconferencing, remoteaccess,

Web site and e-mail addresses. So what? Just because you’re always available to the media

doesn’t mean the media has easy access to your clients. What will your high-tech office be able to do

when a reporter wants a press kit at 7 p.m. on a Friday evening? Nothing – except hastily prepare the

hard copy kit for a costly overnight shipment.

There is a simple way to eliminate the need for keeping a large inventory of hard copy press kits and

reduce your dependency on the shipping company guy: publish your clients’ press kits online.

Making the move from hard copies to press kits published online that are always-accessible is essential

in today’s age of e-mail. The corporate world lives by e-mail; reporters and other media professionals

are no different. These people are busy and time is always of the essence when they’ve got deadlines

breathing down their necks. The decision to use your client in a story instead of someone else is

contingent on whose information is easiest to get. If it takes all night for your client’s press kit to reach

their desk, you might get bumped.

I know what you’re saying right now. “But, Drew, I e-mail my clients’ press materials to the media.”

Well, that’s great, but just because reporters use e-mail doesn’t mean they open every stranger’s

message that arrives in their inbox and it especially doesn’t mean that they even bother opening your

attachments. Why? Because it’s too risky.

First of all, everyone knows not to open an e-mail from someone you don’t know; especially if there’s

an attachment. This is e-mail safety 101. Strange e-mails with attachments usually mean one thing:

virus. At least, that’s the take of most business’s firewalls and anti-virus protection systems. You may

think you’re making waves by mass e-mailing your media lists with attached press releases, but how

many calls are you getting back? Not many, since your important e-mail has been tossed out with the

“wasser” worm and those annoying “enlargement” e-mails.

So what’s the solution? Reject technology and start snail-mailing and faxing again? No. Embrace

technology and publish your press kits online.

Now, an online press kit is not a Web site. Don’t be confused by the term “online.” Though an online

press kit can be displayed online and present information like a Web site, it is really a virtual folder or

briefcase that allows you to upload and store your press materials on the Internet. Once in your online

press kit folder, these documents and images can be distributed as links – not attachments.

When you prepare your sharp, concise e-mail pitch to the media, you simply insert links to your clients’

press kits. When the reporter clicks the link, the document can be opened and saved on their computer.

It opens like an attachment, but the documents themselves live online. Instead of piling them onto your

e-mail, you’re simply providing directions (a link) to get to them. They become part of the e-mail

message, so a media outlet’s virus protection system won’t automatically kick it out of the system.

Virtually anything can be uploaded to an online press kit: press releases, high-resolution images, video

and audio clips, graphics and more. Plus, since you have control over your online press kits, you can

always be sure they’re up to date.

Now you’re thinking “Wow, these things sound great, but I bet they are expensive.” Not necessarily.

Though there are online press kit programs available that cost into the thousands, they usually include

extra features you don’t really need and will probably never use. Think of the online press kit market as

the binder or folder aisle at your favorite office supply store. Sure there are binders with all kinds of

extras, but you pass those by for what you need and the price you can live with.

Face it – technology is only going to get better and faster. Don’t be left in its dust trying to wave down

that brown truck with your emergency overnight press kit. By going online with your clients’ press kits,

you’re not only making them easy to access, but easy to cover by the media. The media loves that – and

so will your clients.

Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. Sam was the sixth of seven children of John and Jane Clemens, with only two of his siblings surviving childhood; his brother Orion and sister Pamela.

When Sam was four years old the family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, a small frontier town on the banks of the Mississippi River. Missouri gained statehood in 1820, and the time of Sam’s youth it comprised a portion of the country’s western border. Missouri was a slave-holding state. The family owned one slave named Jenny. Sam’s uncle also owned several slaves. Sam delighted in the spirituals and tall-tales told by Jenny and in the slave quarters of his uncle. This early influence would serve young Clemens well.

Sam was eleven years old when his father died in 1847. He left school in the fifth grade to work as a printer’s apprentice for a local paper. It was there, while setting type, that Sam got a taste for the news and a sense of the world beyond the small village of Hannibal.

At eighteen, Sam set out for New York and Philadelphia, working for several newspapers and getting some of his first articles published.

But Ol’ Man River was to tug on Clemens’ imagination. In 1857, Sam embarked on his career as a riverboat pilot. Guiding a riverboat down the capricious Mississippi was no easy feat in the mid-nineteenth century. After two years of meticulously learning the ways of the river Sam earned his pilot license.

During his training, Clemons convinced his younger brother Henry to come join him on the river. On June 21st, 1858, the steamboat Henry was working on exploded; a tragic accident that killed Sam’s brother. Ridden with guilt, Sam held himself responsible for Henry’s death for the rest of his life.

Sam’s career as a riverboat pilot came to an end with the start of the Civil War in 1861 when river traffic was halted.

Though a slave state and considered by many as part of the South, Missouri did not join the Confederacy. Clemens and some friends formed a Confederate militia of which he later wrote a short story called The Private History of a Campaign That Failed. The militia joined a battle in which a man was killed. Sam discovered that he had no taste for killing and thus deserted. His friends joined the Confederate army, and Sam was ready for a new chapter in his life.

Answering a call from his older brother Orion, who had just been appointed Secretary of the Nevada Territory, Sam headed west with hopes of striking it rich in Nevada’s silver rush.

As it went for most miners, his dream of riches failed to materialize, so he went back to his journalistic pursuit writing for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. It was here that Clemens realized he needed a pseudonym for his emerging voice as a writer. Harking back to his days as a riverboat pilot and the process of periodically measuring the depth of the river, Sam found his new name. When the distance between riverbed and the bottom of the boat became dangerously close the alert would be sounded from the leadsman: “Marrrrk Twain!”

Mark Twain.

And an American Philosopher was born.

Mark Twain first achieved national and international acclaim with a short story entitled Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog.

A year later Twain was hired by the Sacramento Union to visit and report on his impressions of the Sandwich Islands (modern day Hawaii). The wit and humor of his dispatches further accelerated his celebrity. Upon his return he launched his first lecture tour, and Mark Twain’s career was laid out.

He traveled widely providing his growing audience a sardonic look at the world. His first tour of Europe eventually led to his first book, Innocents Abroad, which led to Twain meeting his future wife, Olivia, to whom he remained married until her death in 1904.

Through his many novels, articles, speeches, and books Mark Twain’s wit and wisdom showed Man as a funny creature, full of contradictions and foibles. Sometimes finding hope in the human condition, and sometimes despair (especially in his later life), Twain usually managed to bring to his observations a gentle humor that to this day helps ease the discomfort of being human.

In 1909 Mark Twain is quoted as saying;

“I came in with Haley’s Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it. It will be the greatest disappointment of my life if I don’t go out with Haley’s Comet. The Almighty has said, no doubt: ‘Now here are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together’.”

The following year, on April 21st, 1910 Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known the world over and to this day as Mark Twain, died, riding on the tail of a comet.

Joining A Club For Flying

Your love for flying can grow stronger, deeper, and be supported with greater experience when you join a flying or aviation club.

Factors to Consider When Choosing the Best Flying Club

LOCATION – Its headquarters, airfield or on-site location, and clubhouse must be located in proximity to your area or at least somewhere that you won’t have a hard time getting to anytime you want. There’s no point joining a club if you can’t spend much time with other members!

GOALS AND SYSTEM – What are the goals of the founding members of the flying club? Do you agree with their goals, and is it something you wish to achieve as well? How are things run inside the club? How are the officials elected? Are all members treated equally?

MEMBERS – How many members does the flying club have? Are you more comfortable with a smaller or bigger group of people? Are most members the same age? Besides a love for flying, do you think you can share anything else with other members? Do you think you can treat them like family after some time? Are you willing to make adjustments to get along with everyone?

REQUIREMENTS – Are there any in the first place? Will you have to pay an annual fee so you can join? Will you have to attend a required number of meetings every year? Do you have to be a licensed pilot in order to join or will a sincere love for flying do as well? Do you have to be a legitimate resident of Perth, England or Dallas, Texas in order to join a Perth or Dallas flying club?

ACTIVITIES – What kind of activities does the flying club offer? How many times will you be able to fly together? Besides having actual flights, what other activities can you expect to do with your club? Are there any joint projects or friendly bouts of competition with other flying clubs? Will you attend flying seminars together? Are there social activities planned as well such as annual Christmas parties and Halloween events?

BENEFITS – Last but not least, what’s the perk of joining one club over the rest? Does it give you free or exclusive access to certain things or places? Will the club be able to offer you special rates or offers once in a while?

Consider these factors well when choosing an aviation club. Have fun socializing with your own mile-high club!

If an illegal has a pilots license from Mexico & needs a to fly illegal workers to & from jobs is it allowed?

So they can pick apples, oranges, strawberries, cucumbers, lettuce, flights to job sites in other states to do work no American will do, like a taking 50 workers to NYC to be dishwahers for a week, next week, Dallas,Texas is this allowed if it is used to give all a better life ?

An illegal crashed into my car last week costing me $1500, now that is not what i call giving me a better life.

Driving while intoxicated with no license, no insurance and no registration all while in a nation illegally, now that is the jobs illegals do that most Americans won’t LOL. Maybe he was just looking for a better life and decided to crap on anyone who got in the way of his party, that’s the way illegals roll…..and their supporters too as you can see.

"War is over; the heroic French population reaffirms superiority. Love, Paris, and Flowers but London was black, white, and gray, the elegance, the style, all present in front of always changing fog. This became my only try to make a ‘Story’." –Robert Frank This magnificent new edition of London/Wales, which features never-before-seen photographs, juxtaposes Frank’s images of the elegant world of London money with the grimy working-class world of postwar Wales–bankers opposite coal miners. It brings together two distinct bodies of work, and reveals a significant documentary precedent for The Americans. In also offers an important view of Frank’s development, demonstrating an early interest in social commentary, in the narrative potential of photographic sequencing, and innovative use of the expressionistic qualities of the medium.

Usually, when we consider air travel in the UK we tend to think of airports in London and southeast of the country. However, the southwest of the country has seen much development in air travel over the last ten years and it is becoming more and more likely that holidaymakers from Devon, Cornwall and Somerset will be able to find a flight to their desired destination without having to travel to London first. Here is a short guide to the Westcountry’s most significant airports.

Exeter International Airport

Civil flights began from Exeter Airport during 1946 after it was handed over by the RAF. By 1952 Exeter was offering short haul overseas flights to the Channel Islands (it still does today), and by the 1980s its services solidified its reputation as the most important airport in the Westcountry. Today the airport also offers many internal flights, along with overseas flights to Dubrovnick, Paris, Salzberg, and Toronto by airlines ranging from Flybe to Thomson.

Plymouth City Airport

By comparison, Plymouth Airport has seen relatively little growth over the years, despite its long history that stretches back to 1923. In recent years the airport boasted services to internal destinations, the Channel Islands and France, but by September 2007 it looked as if the airport would close due to the proposed sale of its second runway for industrial development. However, the following month a number of new routes were announced to Ireland, Chambéry and Newcastle amongst others and the airport benefited from a new lease of life.

Newquay Cornwall Airport

Internal commercial services have been in place at Newquay since the middle of the 20th century, but it wasn’t until 1975 that British Midland Airways constructed a fully-fledged passenger terminal. By the end of the 70s, overseas flights to the Channel Islands were available, and by the 90s a new civil terminal allowed the airport to process more passengers. In 2008 a long-term Airport Masterplan was drafted with the initial aim to process 700,000 passengers annually. Newquay now offers flights within the UK and across Europe.

Bristol International Airport

Bristol airport is one of the fastest growing airports in the UK and processed over 6 million passengers in 2008. Subsequently, it is the Westcountry’s busiest airport and has the widest range of services including airport parking and excellent connections to Wales and south west England. Bristol has the most comprehensive number of services to Europe from the area, including: Brussels, Amsterdam and Trieste, whilst it also offers international flights to destinations as diverse as: Tenerife, Sharm el-Sheikh, and Orlando.

Male Breast Cancer? Uncommon but Serious

At 41, Brian Place found a lump near his left nipple and dismissed it as a sort of injury from the rough games he had been involved with for most of his life.  He thought that the lump was probably a result of a collision with another rugby player.  Though his doctor didn’t think much of the lump either, nevertheless, he advised Place to get a mammogram test.  When the ultrasound of the breast and a biopsy came out, the diagnosis shocked Place and his colleagues from the Royal Air Force in Britain where he works as a Communications Technician: breast cancer.
Staff at his local breast clinic even assumed that Place was accompanying a female patient during his check up. The confusion is understandable. Only about less than 1% of breast cancers diagnosed occur in men. The rarity of breast cancer in men leaves so much room for research regarding the condition.   According to Dr. Larissa Korde, staff clinician at the National Cancer Institute’s clinical genetics branch, “In women, we have studies based on hundreds of thousands of patients.”  However, there are no studies of that scale in men. “Though much can be extrapolated from research in women,” said Korde, ” it’s a little bit harder to make recommendations for men based on evidence.”
One of the surest risk factors to consider is family medical history, that is, for both men and women.  At the time of Place’s diagnosis, two female relatives of his had died of breast cancer and a third of ovarian cancer.  However, several genes may contribute to breast cancer, such as mutations which are known to increase the possibilities of both breast and ovarian cancers. Although most men might never even meet a man with breast cancer, those who have several relatives diagnosed with breast cancer should be wary for signs of their own breast tumors. Based on studies, certain populations with an unusually high proportion of people carrying BRCA2 mutations may have a higher incidence rate of breast cancer in men, such as in Sweden, Hungary, Iceland, and among Ashkenazi Jews.
There are similarities in the survival rates for men and women as they adjust in the stage of the disease at diagnosis.  But since men do not undergo a regular screening like women do, they are more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage.  The lumps may not always be detected by medical scanning equipment.

Medical treatment usually includes surgery, to be followed by some combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.  With men, an additional hormone treatment is necessary because almost all men with breast cancer have tumors characterized as hormone-receptor-positive.
After two years of medical treatment and therapy, Place is now doing well.  Two years after his diagnosis, Place is well enough to play contact sports. The mastectomy was successful, and Place has decided to discontinue his hormone treatment due to its side effects like hot flashes which he found to be very unpleasant.
Brian Place is now an active participant in online discussions and support group communities for cancer patients.  He tries to answer questions regarding male breast-cancer conditions.  Place also gives talks to people who contact him through the U.K. nonprofit Breast Cancer Care. Although there are women who are not yet accustomed to men with breast cancer condition, time and awareness can help address the issue.

What military force should I join?

I am planning to join the military and I was wondering who I should join, the US marines,US army airborne division, US army air assault, UK Royal Marines,UK parachute regiment,Canadian army CSOR. As well which ones have better bases, better equipment, and the least BS.

They all have their fair share of BS. If you’re all gung-ho about joining active duty and jumping right into it then go with the Marines.

If you want to try out the military life and see what its all about without a “total” commitment try the Army National Guard. You can go to school while still being a soldier. Deployments will arise that will allow you to experience active duty life.

Any questions, let me know.
