Heathrow Airport dates back to the First World War when it was just one of several airfields used by the British Flying Corps. After the war, the grass airfield was closed due to weather and terrain conditions (mud, bog etc). Fairey Aviation bought the airfield and some land around it and re-opened it in the 1930’s, using it mostly to test aircraft until it was requisitioned by the Ministry of Air in 1944. Throughout WWII, it was reserved for use by the Royal Air Force (RAF).

The decision to transfer Heathrow Airport from military to civil control was made in 1944, after the end of the War. A master plan was drawn up for building terminals (there were none) and an air traffic control tower. The new Heathrow Airport was to be built on an area of 1500 acres, at a total cost of £20,000,000. Heathrow’s first runway (the east-West runway) was completed by the end of 1945 and two other runways were being built. Heathrow Airport was officially transferred from military to civilian control in 1946. The Airport expanded at a fast pace over the next few years. By 1953, 1 million passengers (62,000 flights) were using it annually, compared to 60,000 passengers (9000 flights) in 1946.

Pre-fabricated buildings had replaced the tents that served as terminals in the early days, but in 1955, Heathrow Airport’s first real terminal, the ‘Europa Building,’ (the current Terminal 2) was opened. The London Air Traffic Control Centre was transferred from Uxbridge to the new Heathrow Control Tower in 1955. Heathrow’s Terminal 3, originally called the ‘Oceanic Buildin,’ dates back to 1961. When Terminal One was built, in 1968, it was the largest airport terminal in Europe. In the 1970s, the airport continued to expand and develop, notably with the addition of an arrivals building to Terminal 3 and the extension of the airport’s runways.

Heathrow’s three first terminals were built, close together, in the centre of the airport, inside the runways triangle. London airport parking was a non-issue at the time because most of (the very few) air travelers were rich enough to be chauffeur-driven to the terminals. Today, however, the proximity of the terminal buildings to one another is a major problem facing Heathrow airport parking facilities. Transportation to Heathrow, a related problem, was improved when, in 1977, the Piccadilly tube (subway) line was extended to Heathrow Airport’s three central terminals. In 1986, Terminal 4 (at the south end of the airport) was completed, and two years later, it too was linked to the Piccadilly line. A non-stop train service (the Heathrow Express) linking Heathrow’s four terminals to Paddington Station began running in 1999.

Heathrow Airport has continued to expand in the 21st century. In 2005, the Heathrow Connect Rail Service was inaugurated, the number of seats in Terminal One’s lounge was doubled (1000 additional seats) and retail space was expanded by 20% (22 extra stores). That same year, the Heathrow Interim Master Plan was initiated to plan for additional growth.

In 2006, a new £100 million pound pier building in Terminal 3 and a 285ft high new control tower (total cost of £50 million) were built. The old tower was not high enough to serve the need of the latest planned addition to Heathrow Airport – Terminal 5.  By 2007, Heathrow Airport was operating at near 50% over capacity, and approval was granted for the construction of a new terminal, ‘Heathrow East,’ to replace Terminals 1 and 2. The most significant Heathrow expansion in the twenty-first century, however, was the addition of Terminal 5. Government approval for the construction of Heathrow’s Terminal 5 was granted in November 2001, after 46 months of public inquiry.

The Terminal 5 construction project included building a main terminal and three satellite buildings, all on the far west of the airport. The first phase of the project (the main terminal and the first of the three satellite buildings) has been completed and the second satellite building is expected to be completed by 2011. To address T 5 parking at Heathrow, a 4,000 space multi-storey car park, operated by an advanced automated parking system, was added to Heathrow airport parking facilities. The project also included the construction of a new road from the M25 motorway to the airport, reconstructing the western perimeter road and extensions of the Heathrow Express and the Piccadilly line rail links.

Terminal 5 was opened to the public in March 2008, having cost a total of £4.3bn, but the opening was chaotic. Flights had to be cancelled and luggage was lost. T5 was only able to resume full service in April 2008. Initial operational difficulties were attributed to staffing problems and computer terminal errors.

Plans for Future Expansion

On January 15, 2009, the Government granted approval for the construction of a third runway to the north of Heathrow Airport, at an estimated cost of about £8 billion. This development (to be completed by 2020) will raise airport capacity by 350 flights a day. The transport secretary also approved the construction of a sixth terminal at Heathrow Airport. However, there are widespread concerns over the environmental impact of this decision. If these concerns about £8 billion can be overcome, construction of Heathrow’s third runway and sixth terminal could begin by 2012.

Elton John was born in Pinner, Middlesex, England on March 25, 1947. His name at birth was Reginald Kenneth Dwight and in his early musical career sometimes went by the nickname of Reggie. His parents were interested in the world of music, as well. They were collectors of record albums and so exposed their son to many artists, including Elvis Presley and Bill Haley and His Comets. John’s dad played the trumpet in the Bob Millar Band, which was a big band with the military.

His dad, Stanley Dwight, was in the Royal Air Force and was a strong disciplinarian. His mother, Sheila Eileen Harris, was much more footloose and fancy free. His parents reportedly had intense bouts of bickering that finally ended in their divorce when h was fifteen. Because Stanley Dwight was absent so often, the boy ended up being raised for quite some time by his mother and grandmother. Sheila later remarried to an artist named Fred Farebrother. Fred was a kind and supportive stepfather and Elton playfully gave him the nickname of Derf, which was Fred in reverse.

Elton John began to play the piano at the age of three. He was a natural at it and by the age of four years old, he was playing waltzes by ear. It wasn’t long before he was paraded before relatives and friends as a performing star of the family. His career had begun. At the age of seven, he began to take formal piano lessons and showed talent and aptitude immediately. He started to compose songs and became well known at school functions. He went to the Royal Academy of Music after winning a scholarship to the school at age eleven.

He traveled to the music academy on Saturdays along with attending his regular local school. Elton John has had a fabulous and long career. He has been called one of the most successful artists of all time, having sold more than 250 million records. He has won Grammy, Tony, Academy, and Golden Globe awards. He became a Knight in 1998 and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

He has also been active in helping with the fight against AIDS. All of his life has not been smooth, however. John has had his share of tough times dueling with his own personal demons. He’s had trouble with drug addition, bulimia, alcoholism and losing his hair. He’s been in rehab, suffered with a drug overdose and has had some rather severe money spending compulsions. It has reportedly spent multi-millions of dollars in short amounts of time on items ranging from flowers to fancy cars. He has been quoted as saying, simply, that he “liked flowers”.

At age sixty-two, Elton John is still going strong. His music is well loved around the world and has been sung by many famous performers as well as by himself.

The dress code for golf has evolved in keeping with the game itself. As times have changed, the outfit for day-to-day play has kept pace. Today fashion clothing is all the rage.

Photographs of golfers in the early 1900s show them wearing the uniform of the day. They typically wore baggy plus-four trousers and a thick Norfolk jacket. Harry Vardon expressed the view that his jacket helped to hold his swing together.

The Norfolk jacket was made of sturdy tweed, a rough unfinished woollen fabric that was moisture resistant. It was fashionable not only for golf, but for other outdoor pursuits such as hiking, fishing and pheasant shooting.

Underneath were the customary collar and tie and occasional waistcoat. Knee-length woollen socks, stout shoes and a Tam o’shanter or flat cap completed the look. Ladies were attired in full Victorian wear as it was not considered important for them to win at competitive sports.

When Vardon toured America in 1900 to give a number of exhibition matches, the local establishment keenly made note of his signature outfit. Knickerbockers were not unknown, but it was children who mostly wore them. Such was the influence of the man the golfing public took to wearing the same outfits as their overseas cousins.

American golfers were undoubtedly the front runners in the changing dress code, being well ahead of the more conservative British. From heavy drab clothing that was cumbersome and inhibited the swing to today’s multi-coloured garments with moisture wicking fibres.

The 1930s saw a gradual phasing out of the jacket especially when the weather was warm. The tie, knitted cardigan or Argyle sweater was the new more casual uniform and trousers started to replace the traditional plus-four and plus-two.

With time more stylish and practical clothing started to appear and by the 1940s the tie was largely abandoned and the short-sleeved knitted shirt was in vogue.

Shoes were an earlier exception and had become a fashion statement in their own right. Bobby Jones championed two-tone brown and white golf shoes in the 1920s. The Prince of Wales helped spread their popularity when during a diplomatic visit in 1924 he wore tan and white spectator sport shoes.

To say that the early dress code for golf attire was monochrome and uninteresting was to understate its blandness. The only colour in the game came from individuals like Walter Hagan who were happy to buck the trend. A fashion statement of Sam Stead was to change fairly often the colourful broad band on his snap-brim Palmetto hat.

In the 1960s Gary Player discarded red and white clothing and chose black instead. He claimed that it gave him strength as it held the warmth in. When he played St Andrews in the 1960 British Open he wore unusual trousers in the first round with one leg black and the other white.

In the United States Jimmy Demaret pioneered wearing colours other than black, white, and gray. Doug Sanders, who was known as the peacock of the fairways, spent a lot of money and time on his wardrobe of brightly coloured shirts and slacks. Jumbo Ozaki who has a passion for purple was the pioneer of colourful clothing in Japan.

Fashion clothing is now big business and clothing manufacturers are in the ascendancy in their influence on the golfing scene. A number of well known golfers have their own clothing lines and the sticker price for their logo items is set in the same way as fashion houses price their perfumes.

Most private clubs retain a dress code, with collared shirts obligatory with no obvious advertising on them. Members and their guests are asked to dress in good taste to maintain the dignity of the game of golf. At public courses they try to ban jeans, t-shirts and flip-flops, but are mostly unsuccessful as they are no marshals to enforce the rules.

The fashion trend is now firmly set by celebrities, and young charismatic golfers on the various tours. The dress code of the future has become the province of the youth. Where it will all end remains to be seen. Maybe professional golfers will become walking billboards like Formula One racing drivers.

Of one thing there is no doubt. As in the case of King Canute, no-one will be able to hold back the rising tide of fashion. It was Mark Twain who astutely remarked “Clothes make the man; Naked people have little or no influence on society”.

Neville Walker has a passion for golf and has played golf on hundreds of golf courses all over the world. His particular interest is writing about how to improve your putting. He runs a web site on the subject which can be found at http://www.better-golf-by-putting-better.com

Does anyone know where I can hire a Prince Harry uniform for a party Lt Gruber is throwing in my honour?

Lol thats sounds like a riot!!! :D

Maybe you could put one together with stuff from ebay, you know a ginger wig and a desert army outfit, maybe a machine gun and some false big teeth? Put on a posh accent snort when you laugh and hey presto… Prince Andrews your uncle! Sorted, now you just gotta get stoned.

Something that has puzzled me since first travelling to Las Vegas in 2003. I would say around Utah, Colorado.

Not that close to the Grand Canyon, looking from the air there are all different shaped, almost like helicopter landing pads but so, so many triangle, square, round and look like concrete.Tried to ask the flight attendant the last time but she got busy. Regular people flying, pilots, flight attendants WHAT ARE THEY?

I think I know what you are talking about. If it is these:

they are crops grown using what is called circular irrigation – here is some more info on it –

So you want to fly for a dollar on Southwest, but you’re tired of sitting in the middle seat, at the back of the plane, smelling the restroom sanitizer spray? Yes, THE SECRET isn’t some law of attraction, it’s getting a good seat on an “open-seating” flight. After flying on gazillions of Southwest planes, touring as a corporate comedienne, I’ve figured it out! Here are ways to raise the odds that you’ll get a decent seat too.

IF THE PLANE ISN’T COMPLETELY FULL AND YOU’RE IN THE “A” OR “B” LINE. . . you of course want to get in a row where the middle seat stays empty!

Sit in rows 5 through 8. According to my unscientific research of watching people-patterns (no lab rats involved), I’ve noticed a people-pattern. Passengers tend to fill up the front couple rows first, THEN, starting with about row 5, if they see a person sitting in that row they head to the back, searching for a better seat! I HYPOTHESIZE (like a scientist) that they can’t see the back until about row 9, and then it’s too late to do that salmon swimming upstream move, so they’re stuck. Park it in rows 5-8, where one person is already sitting, and there’s a really, really good chance that the middle seat will stay vacant. BONUS TIP. . .I’ve even noticed (ahem, studied) that people fill up the LEFT side (as you’re walking down the aisle) first; so you should sit on the right side.

Sit in a row that already has one person in it. If you sit in an empty row, there’s the chance that TWO people traveling together will sit next to you.

Sit in a row with one person in it. . .where the overhead bin is FULL. Most people have a carryon the size of Kansas, with all sorts of valuable toothpaste that they have to sit near. So if the bin is full, they’ll keep going! You of course checked your luggage, so you’re a free agent to sit underneath the bin-filled seats. If you have a carry-on, make sure you sit in a seat where your bag fills the bin up. This is a good time to have a bag the size of Kansas.

IF ALL THAT’S LEFT ARE CENTER SEATS BECAUSE YOU’RE A “C” PERSON. . . you still might avoid the “C is for Center seat” fate.

Look for people who match, with an empty middle seat in-between them. Twin Budweiser T-shirts or the same Harley tattoo means they’re probably traveling together. Eureka! Start to sit in THAT middle seat, because, guess what? One of ‘em will move over to be near their honey, and you’ll get an aisle or window even though you’re a “C” person. Brilliant!

Sit behind the exit row. If you’ve got a short (like 30 minute) flight to a hub city like Phoenix, and you’re not changing planes, but rather going on to an even longer flight, sit in the row behind the exit row, even if it’s the center seat. Chances are the exit row people will exit at the hub and you can move up. BONUS TIP. . . Don’t wait for the flight attendant to let you move. Do it while everyone is getting off the plane (just make sure you’re seated for their headcount!). And NEVER sit in the row in front of the exit row . . . those seats don’t recline.

IF THE PLANE IS DEFINITELY GOING TO BE FULL. . . you can still have a decent ride.

Hand pick your partner. You’re gonna be stuck with potluck if you aren’t proactive and make eye-contact with desirable people. Lure them in with a quick smile and show them that you’ve got a book, which is the universal travel sign for “I won’t bother you with my chatter.” Of course YOU define “desirable”. . I’m tall, so I’m looking for small people who look like they bathed. BONUS TIP. . .As you’re waiting in line, memorize the first person in the “C” line. When the “C” leader starts through, you’ll know it’s time to get serious with your “come hither” looks.

BONUS, BONUS TIPS. . .

A bag on the seat does not mean someone is sitting there. Ask, ask, ask because that person is being rude, rude, rude. They could be trying to hog a whole row by pretending the seats are full.

Bolt for the exit row. If you’re one of the first people in the “A” line, check out the exit row immediately upon boarding. Many, many people only think to sit up front, and forget about the great leg-room in those seats. I’ve gotten the exit row being 20th or later in line!

Check in 24 hours in advance. Even if you’re in a hotel and can’t print the boarding pass, you can check in, and then print the actual pass at the airport. (FYI if you print your boarding pass on your printer, look at the number at the left hand bottom. That number is the number you checked in at – I’m #1 lots of times!)

Take the first flight out in the morning. Because the plane is there, it’s not coming from somewhere else, so you have a better chance of an on-time flight. AND no one is sitting in the prime seats, like the exit row, from an earlier flight.

Of course a friend of mine who was split up from her son, got to switch seats by handing him a barf bag and telling him (loudly) to “use this when you get sick.” The person next to him switched seats with her. Hey, use what you got! Here’s to more comfortable travel. . .for a buck!
