Here’s the coming couples’ idea, the latest fun pursuit for a marriage celebration ritual that’s been making a comeback, the dinner party. It’s called the squeasel word party, and it does require a bit of explanation. Squeasel words aren’t necessarily descriptions of ways to make your mate feel more appreciated, though that could be one of many uses for them. Squeasel words are a mashup of two words to create a whole new word, while condensing and amplifying the meaning of the two original words at the same time. Chillaxin’ is one mentioned above, and is, of course, a mashup of chilling and relaxing. The title of this piece ought to be self-explanatory, and I’ll leave it at that, as my editor may have a problem with an overt description of the first word. Suffice to say that the first word describes what we’d collectively been doing at our jobs all day, the second described the atmosphere around the sun deck that evening, as the charcoal glowed in the grill, the wine coolers dripped with sweat, and the steaks sizzled.

Couples can’t help having a great time at a squeasel word party. It’s exactly what it says, a dinner party with friends, during which the goal is create as many squeasels as possible, and to keep the creative juices flowing right along with the good food and good cheer. No more Twister, or Trivial Pursuit. It’s time to add as many new words and explanations to the old Funk & Wagnalls as possible. In addition to the two squeasel words listed above, here’s what our last encounter with friends produced. Some of these are almost painfully banal, others, we thought, were inspired and elegant.

As the finger foods arrived, and compliments were shared with the chef, we began grazepraising, then dipchippin’ (of course), then we moved right into swigulping, and, for the, ahem, more chillaxed among us, a bit of brewbelching, naturally. I should mention at this point that it may be wise to leave the kids at a neighbor’s house for the duration. Squeasels aren’t necessarily coarse and/or vulgar, but as your little party progresses, and certain individuals engage in more and more swigulping, they tend to gravitate toward rather more let us say colorful verbal inventions. Call it crudedubbing, or possibly slapfacers, depending on whether or not one’s mate is within earshot.

The conversation drifted toward offices and careers, and rumors of intrigue which were promptly squeaseled into plotjobbing. Facial creases due to long hours became workylines. The necessity of making nice in order to retain one’s job, while putting in more and more hours made some of us overtame. Inevitably, someone mentioned a modern controversy, the office romance. The reference was to a young, alluring fill-in who was referred to simply as, what else, the office temp-tation. Our host could have had her apron printed up and sold in quantity after one of our more creative guests squeaseled that she was so darned barbecute. Clearly the swigulping had taken its toll.

Steaks finished their charflips, beers were topped off, or ‘foamented’, and plates were produced. Shortly the squeaseling ceased, or I might say, squeaced for a time. Not happy with the limited squeasels created thus far, we attempted to outdo one another on various current events. I make no apologies for the outcome, nor do I attribute authorship, wishing to retain at least a semblance of dignity.

Lance Armstrong’s latest attempt at the Tour De France was the lanky Texans try at recycling himself, a libertarian member of the party wanted President Obama to apply the taxbrakes, and for the health care town hall meetings, and their somewhat misleading tactics the squeasel was mediscare. None of us wanted to be caught up in an insurance mixup, or we might acquire an illbill, and have to copray that we’re not misdiagnosed and a end up with a dead-ductable. Nobody needs that.

So get the invitations printed up, squeasel your own way into the etymological hall of fame, and have a good time doing it. One last bit of advice: I think the designated driver is a fine idea, particularly after a squeasel word party. As they say, never drink and derive.

Loss of human life is no doubt the main cause of concern in earthquakes. The magnitude, location and era of the earthquake all play a role in determining the number of casualties in any given event.

Collapse of buildings constructed from weak, heavy materials such as un-reinforced masonry or earth can cause large number of deaths during the fore, main and after shock of an earthquake.

The physical consequence of earthquakes for human beings can be divided into two categories.

(A) Injury and loss of life.

(B) Condition of the built and natural environments.

These physical effects are considered in terms of the social and economic consequences of the event, which include casualties, trauma and bereavement, cost of material damage, loss of jobs and employees/skills, loss of heritage, business interruption, consumption of materials and energy and impact on the macro-economic level.

All the above mentioned factors should be considered when calculating acceptable consequences i.e. the acceptable earthquake risk.

Taking into account the factors of finance and expertise, work on the reduction of these consequences can only be done for strong ground shaking. The basic planning aims are to minimize the use of land which has experienced the worst shaking or ground damages, such as landslides, fault rupture, or liquefaction.

Basic aims are limited to:

(1) The reduction of loss of life in any earthquake, either through collapse or through secondary damage such as falling debris or earthquake-induced fire.

(2) The reduction of damage and loss of functionality of the built environment.

Of course, the demand of earthquake resistance is greater for some buildings because they are more important. In the design brief, it is necessary to not only make an assessment of the inherent value of the structure (contents, function, special parts, etc), but also the survival value that the owner has placed upon it.

Awareness of the high seismic risks associated with certain types of older buildings has increased, as a result, strengthening and replacement programs for these buildings have been introduced in various parts of the world. The economic affects of the loss of many such buildings in earthquakes are apparent, but the primary reason behind the initiation of such programs has been the general attempt to reduce deaths and injuries, and also save culturally and historically important structures.

In some countries, such as New Zealand, different public buildings are designed for higher earthquake forces. Fire and police stations, dams, hospitals, schools, government offices, bridges, radio and telephone services and energy sources should not cease to function because of an earthquake. In other words, anything that can prevent major loss of life when the earthquake occurs and with the help of the emergency services afterwards should remain intact.

Naturally, attention is given to consequences of damage to individual properties by the concerned authorities, but it can be seen now that more concern is  being shown towards overall effects of a given earthquake. The overall effects of a large earthquake can have a financial and physical impact on government departments, insurance companies and emergency services.

How much does a New Zealand pilot get paid?

Can someone who knows the answer please tell me how much NZ pilots (of planes, not helicopters) get paid. Also, if you could add the different types of jobs and the amounts that would be great thanks (eg: how much an instructor gets paid, how much an airliner pilot gets paid, ect). Thanks…

New Zealand pilots get payed lots compared to their counterparts in North America and many parts of europe. Air New Zealand pays its pilots very well and is one of the best companies to work for in New Zealand and Oceania. Sorry i’m not going into much detail about salaries but that is confidential. I will say however that the information on the Airline Pilot Central site (link provided by Rock Legends) will give you a pretty good idea of pilot pay at Air New Zealand.

Steps Towards Becoming an Army Officer

There are two kinds of officers in the US Army, Warrant Officers and Commissioned Officers. Each category has its own specialized training, areas of expertise, and responsibilities.

Warrant Officer:

Warrant Officers are highly specialized experts in their career fields, and function as trainers. They provide valuable guidance to both commanders and organizations. People who are accepted into the Warrant Officer Candidate School (WOCS) must attend the Basic Combat Training (BCT). After BCT, they have to attend WOCS. Warrant Officers also pilot the ultra advanced helicopters on combat, reconnaissance and rescue missions, for which they are trained with the Warrant Officer Flight Training (WOFT) program, starting directly after the WOCS.

To apply for the Warrant Officer Candidate School or Warrant Officer Flight Training program, one must have a high school diploma, be between 18 and 33 years of age and a citizen of the United States. They have to score 90 or higher on the revised Flight Aptitude Selection Test (FAST) and get at least 110 General Technical (GT) score on the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). They must also meet the height and weight standards and pass a standard physical exam.

Commissioned Officers:

Commissioned Officers lead Soldiers during every aspect of a mission. They must make decisions quickly for successful completion of the mission. They bear the ultimate moral responsibility for their decisions. The four ways to become a Commissioned Officer in the US Army are the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), the Officer Candidate School, United States Military Academy at West Point, and Direct Commission Officer

You must enroll in Army ROTC at the same time you enroll in college. Army ROTC courses are available at more than 800 colleges and universities. Cadets take a curriculum of military courses and of elective leadership. The graduates automatically become Second Lieutenant.

Another way is the Officer Candidate School (OCS). After completing BCT, candidates train for a full 14 weeks and then must attend the Officer Basic Course. To apply for Officer Candidate School, you must be a U.S. citizen and a college graduate between 19 and 29 years old at the time of selection.

West Point is one of Americas top universities. Many past graduates of West Point are leaders in government and the military. An applicant to West Point must be between 17 and 23 years old, a U.S. citizen, single, not pregnant, and without legal obligation to support any children. They must have an above-average academic record. They can be congressionally nominated, or with a service-connected nomination, and must have high SAT scores.

Each of the professional branches, like Judge Advocate General (JAG), the Chaplain Corps, and the Medical Corps has an officers training program that trains educationally qualified civilian professionals, and provides direct commission into their field. The training time for these direct commission officers generally varies, depending on the career field.

Internal Recruitments:

The Army Green to Gold program offers enlisted soldiers in the Army the opportunity to get a commission as an Army Officer. This offers enlisted soldiers two ways to earn a baccalaureate degree. The Green to Gold Scholarship Option is for soldiers who want to leave active duty to attend college, and the Green to Gold Active Duty Option caters to Soldiers who wish to remain on active duty and also attend college.

Becoming a US Army Helicopter Pilot?

Which MOS should I go for? I want to become a Helicopter Pilot. I am considering:

15R (AH-64 Attack Helicopter Repairer): Does repairs on the engines, rotors, gearboxes, transmissions, mechanical flight controls and their components and does inspections.

15Y (AH-64D Armament/Electrical/Avionic Systems Repairer): Basically does all other repairs.

15T (UH-60 Helicopter Repairer): Repairs everything on the UH-60 Helo…A.K.A Black Hawk.

Also how long should I serve before I apply for the WOFT (Warrant Officer Flight Training)? I heard 5-8 years.

Also how could I increase my chances of being accepted? (I will have only a few college credits when I join and plan to take some classes while in.) The Army will most likely be my career.

Try to go WOFT initially. You can go from high school to flight school in the Army. When I recruited, I put one kid in that way. It is highly competitive, and the process is long, but if that is your desire, why not go for it right away?

The Royal Enfield motorcycle is a page from history. It is an English motorcycle that unfortunately had to shut shop in 1970.That was the period when most British bike companies came under intense pressure from cheaper and more efficient Japanese Bikes. Against the likes of Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha the Royal Enfield Company just folded up.

Royal Enfield first started bike production in 1898. The company continued making good bikes for many years. Among the models produced were the Bullet, the 250 cc Hornet and the 500cc Fury. Actually the UK Company was sold in 1962.But the new owners also floundered and the gates were shut on the Enfield as far as England was concerned.

In the fifties the Indian government carried out a survey for motorcycles to patrol the border with the newly created state of Pakistan. The choice was the bullet a 350cc bike made in England by the Royal Enfield Company. 850 bullets found their way into India. The bikes were quite successful and it was thought to assemble the Bullet in India. Subsequently an agreement was signed with the parent company and the bike production started in India at Chennai.

The machine made under license was the 350cc bullet. This had a BHP of 18 and gave an average of 10miles to a liter of gasoline. The Army, navy and Air force soon found the bike a success and put it for use for Police duties, Dispatch rider duties and more important for escort and out riding duties on ceremonial occasions for the President and Vice President of India s well as the service chiefs.

The main market for the Bullet was the government. But Enfield India also began marketing the bike for civil use in India. They also launched a smaller 175cc version called the Sherpa which unfortunately failed in the market. A slightly improved version of the Sherpa the Crusader a 175cc bike with a telescopic fork was also launched in early seventies. But this bike also fell by the wayside.

Enfield India in a bid to match the competition of the Japanese bikes set up collaboration with Zundapp of Germany. A manufacturing plant was set up at Ranipet, a place close to Chennai. A series of light weight bikes like the 50 cc Silver Plus, Explorer motorcycle and the Fury 175 were launched. Though the bikes were good technically yet they failed to fire the markets and production was soon discontinued. In 1994 Eicher took over Enfield India. In 1995 the trade mark Royal Enfield was adapted by the Indian company which now became the inheritor of the Royal Enfield Brand. The India Company still makes the same original Bullets as they were in 1955.Due to pressure from the Japanese bike manufacturers Royal Enfield has brought out the 500 cc bullets and a more streamlined option the Thunderbird. This has a self start option as well. It is classified as a cruiser bike.

The Bullet as made in India has acquired a reputation for reliability. Though the pickup is a little poor the bike more than anything makes up for its stability. For Indian roads which are generally below par the bullet can hold its own against any bike. You can hit a pot hole at 70km an hour and the bike will be none the worse for it.

Royal Enfield bullets made in India have carried on the legacy of the original Royal Enfield Company. Lately this bike is getting exported to the UK as well where there is a small market for these rugged machines. The Japanese bikes are sleeker and faster but a Bullet has charm of its own. We must thank Enfield India that the legacy of the Royal Enfield bullet has been kept alive.

what were these kids thinking?

A World War II Royal Air Force pilot was telling a grade-school class about his days in the air corps.

“In 1942, the situation was really bad. The German air force was very strong.

“I remember one day when I was flying my fighter, protecting our bombers, when suddenly out of the clouds these Fokkers appeared.”

Several schoolchildren giggled.

He continued, “I looked up and one was right above me. I pulled up, aimed, and shot down that Fokker. Then they swarmed everywhere! Suddenly I realized that there was another Fokker behind me.”

By now the students were laughing out loud.

Their teacher interrupted. “I think I should explain that ‘Fokker’ was the name of a German-Dutch aircraft manufacturer.”

“That’s true,” said the old pilot, “but these fokkers were flying Messerschmidts!”

i think that they thought not fokkers – but f ucker s – its slightly bit obvious, and they were giggling at that – cos they arent allowed to say sommat like that are they – and they probably thought it woz funny that someone else is sayin that stuff

If you are looking for a luxury holiday that pampers your spirit as well as your body, look no further than these top 5 destinations.

Peru

Peru has long been regarded as a place of power. As reported in James Redfield’s best-seller ‘the Celestine Prophecy’, it is reputed to sit on a ley line, or energetic pathway. Since the book was published, pilgrims in their thousands have visited the mysterious lost city of Machu Picchu. As a consequence, there are many luxury tours available.

However, the magic of Peru is not a modern notion, but something that has been known by its inhabitants for many years. Peru contains the remains of the Inca empire Cuzco, an empire that worshipped the goddess Pachamama, or Mother Earth.

Pachamama is still worshipped worshipped today. This makes witchcraft and magic very popular. In Peru witchcraft and Catholicism have been fused together into the one religion.

On every street corner witchcraft markets can be found selling potions and spells. And brujos or curanderos are numerous. Curanderos use the healing power of Pachamama to cure their patients. Brujos can be found anywhere in Peru, but Huacho, Piura and the Selva district are the best places to find them.

Jerusalem

Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. It plays a central role in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Christianity reveres Jerusalem because in the New Testament, Jesus was brought to Jerusalem soon after his birth. Jerusalem is also home to the Cenacle on Mount Zion, reputed to be the location of Jesus’ Last Supper. Golgotha, or the site of Jesus’ crucifixion, is another central Christian landmark located in Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is sacred to Judaism because King David proclaimed it his capital in the 10th century BCE. Jerusalem contains the site of Solomon’s Temple and the Second Temple. The Temple Mount is the central site of spiritual importance to the Jewish people, and is referred to as the “Holy of Holies.”

Jerusalem is considered the third-holiest city in Islam. The city’s lasting place in Islam is due to the belief that Muhammad was transported one night from Mecca to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, whereupon he ascended to Heaven.

India

The traditional symbol of India is the lotus flower, a symbol of transformation that grows from the mud, yet remains untouched.

India is home to many sacred sites, or tirathas — crossings between the worldly and divine spheres. The seven sacred cities are:

Varanasi and Hardwar, Ayodhya, the birthplace of Rama; Mathura, Lord Krishna’s Birthplace; Dwarka, where Krishna ruled as a king; Kanchipuram, the great Shaivite temple city of Tamil Nadu; and Ujjan, site of Kumbha Mela.

Bodh Gaya is an extremely sacred Indian city. According to Buddhist traditions, Prince Gautama Siddhartha reached the Falgu River and sat in meditation under a bodhi tree. After three days and nights of meditation, Siddharta attained enlightenment.

For Buddhists, Bodh Gaya is the most important of the main four pilgrimage sites relating to the life of Buddha, the other three being Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath.

Tibet

Lhasa is Tibet’s capital and its heart and soul. Jokhang Temple is one of the most sacred temples in all of Tibet. Founded 1,400 years ago, its shadowy hallways and incantations of monks add to the mystery of this intriguing complex. All luxury holidays should include a visit to the Temple.

The Barkhor Prayer Circuit is said to be one of the most powerful spiritual centres on earth. It teems with pilgrims circumambulating the Barkhor loop of devotion. Stalls line the circuit, selling everything from prayer flags to Maoist memorabilia. Make sure you walk the Circuit in a clockwise fashion.

Be sure to visit Potala Palace – once home to the Dalai Lama. It now sits empty as its former resident lives in exile in India. Despite the deserted feel of the place, Potala Palace stands as an impressive example of Asian architecture.

Egypt

The concepts of death and the Afterlife were central to the beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians. The Egyptians believed that when a pharaoh died, everything he needed for the Afterlife would have to be buried with him, even his physical body — which is why mummification was such an important tradition. The ancients believed the pyramids were “where gods were born.”

The Valley of the Kings was and is an important place for Egyptian spirituality. The Egyptian belief that, “To speak the name of the dead is to make him live again” is depicted by the design of the tombs. All luxury tours include a stop at this magnificent destination.

Most tombs were cut into the limestone following a similar pattern: three corridors, an antechamber and a sunken sarcophagus chamber. The king’s formal names were inscribed in the tomb along with his images and statues. The tombs contain text from the Book of the Dead and the Book of the Underworld.

Is It A Disgrace That Prince William Will Not Be Attending Church On Christmas Day?

It has been announced by Buckingham Palace that our future monarch, Prince William, will not be attending church today to celebrate the birth of our saviour.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7158800.stm

Is it a national disgrace that our future defender of tha faith will not be at church today. It has already been announced on Sky News that both he and Prince Harry spent last night drinking heavily in a London nightclub so they are obviously too hung over to mark Christ’s birth.
No Hannahm, it is not his choice. He will be god’s appointed representative on earth so he MUST go to church!

No he’s at “work” in the army.
