Not A Bad Legacy For The Son Of A Car Mechanic

The Mini, it has to be said, is quite a unique little car. There are many cars on the road that, seen from a distance, look similar and confusion often happens when trying to identify one. This ever happens with a Mini. It is one of the first cars a child will learn to identify and one that always holds a high position in people’s estimation. But where did the inspiration come from for a car manufacturer to build something so unique?

We go back to the 1920’s when a man called Charles Cooper was running a small garage in Surbiton that made their speciality the maintenance of racing cars. Cooper had a son called John who left school at fifteen to join the Royal Air Force as an instrument maker during World War Two. After the war, father and son began to produce simple, cheap single seat racing cars for individuals utilising surplus military hardware and these vehicles proved very popular. By 1948, it was necessary for the two to formulate a proper company to meet demand.

What made the Mini so different to what people were used to was the fact that the engine was placed in the back of the vehicle. Where many people saw this as groundbreaking innovation the pair say it was purely down to practical reasons that this happened. With the car being powered by a motorcycle engine, it was easier to put the engine at the back to enable it to be chain driven more efficiently.

Coopers interest in racing continued throughout the years allowing him to break several records at Montlhery in 1953, but he was finding less and less time to compete in races himself and found this took a lot of the fun out of it. But John Cooper’s part in the motor racing world is often understated. Beginning in the early 1950’s all the young, budding racing drivers wanted to drive a Formula One Mini Cooper and these included Stirling Moss and Bruce McLaren.

While attending the United States Grand Prix in Florida in 1959, Cooper met the USAC National Champion and Indianapolis 500 winner – Rodger Ward. The racing abilities of the Mini impressed him so much that he encouraged John Cooper to try the little car out at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Confidence for the Mini to cope on this track was not high among the other drivers but they were left with dropping jaws when the second lap saw the car reaching over 144 miles per hour.

The Mini has been popular among every class of people, from rally drivers to ordinary road users. Rally drivers love the performance and handling abilities, road users love the ease of parking and the low road tax and there aren’t many teenager girls that don’t just love the whole cuteness of the car.

Many young people these days strive to make something of themselves. They do their best at school, go on to university and excel in all things. However, all you need is a vision as John Cooper proved and his vision will live on long into the future despite the sad fact that he passed away on Christmas Eve 2000.

Heated insoles are a popular choice for people who need to be out in the cold for extended periods of time. By using these insoles, the feet are kept warm, which is especially important for those who have poor circulation in their feet and legs. There are a number of different varieties of insoles on the market, with some models having wires. Most people prefer to purchase insoles without wires, as these can be much more comfortable to walk in. Insoles without wires are especially important for people who have a loss of sensation in their feet, as they may not realize the wires are causing discomfort, resulting in injury.

There are various levels of quality and price when shopping for insoles. High quality insoles are especially important if you plan to do a lot of walking while wearing them. Many times people who purchase these insoles have questions regarding how heated insoles work. They basically work by means of electrical resistance, using batteries to generate the electricity. The heat that is generated is then transferred to the insoles, which then warms the feet.

The more desirable models use rechargeable batteries, which can save a lot of money over time. It is important to remember that the surrounding temperature will affect the life of a battery. Rechargeable models are generally easy to use, often utilizing an adapter that the insoles can simply be plugged into to recharge the batteries. Insoles usually use a Lithium-Ion batteries, which are safe, leak-proof, and very small, thin and lightweight.

Quality insoles will monitor the temperature of your feet, so that they know when they need to generate warmth, and how much warmth is needed. By using this method, battery life is conserved, and there is never a risk of your feet becoming too cold or too hot. When wearing heated insoles, it is also important to wear boots or shoes that are large enough to accommodate the extra thickness of the insoles, to insure that your feet remain comfortable and warm. The extra space inside the boots creates a layer of warm air that helps to keep the feet at a stable temperature.

RAF Handbook 1939-1945 (Handbook)

RAF Handbook 1939-1945 (Handbook)

$35.48

Formed on 1 April 1918 from the merger of the Royal Naval Air Service with the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Air Force was the first fully autonomous military air arm in the world. This book is a comprehensive, single source reference on the RAF and the vital part it played in the Second World War. It opens with a brief history of the service, followed by a chapter that reviews its situation on the outbreak of war. The chapters that follow look at the structure of the RAF, from the Air Ministry and Chief of the Air Staff down to squadron level, to include each of the Commands, including Transport Command (a creation of the war years). The main aircraft types used are listed, as well as a full listing of squadrons and airfields in the British Isles. The training of personnel, and such matters as uniforms, rank insignia, medals and life on a typical airfield, are also covered. The main battles or campaigns in which the service was involved are also described.

Essex Tourist Attractions

Hedingham Castle’s 110 feet high Norman keep was built c.1140 by Aubrey de Vere and is still owned by one of his descendants, The Honourable Thomas Lindsay and his wife Virginia. There are four floors to explore, including a magnificent Banqueting Hall spanned by a remarkable 28 foot arch, one of the largest Norman arches in England. A good view of this splendid room can be obtained from the Minstrels’ Gallery, built within the thickness of the 12 foot walls.

A visit to the castle and its beautiful grounds is ideal for a family outing, and during the summer there are a variety of special events which bring its colourful history alive. Why not enjoy one of their exciting Jousting Tournaments or other entertainments.

There are delightful walks around the lake and through the shady woodland under the steep ramparts of the castle defences. This Valley Walk is famous for its spectacular snowdrops in February followed by a carpet of bluebells in May, and the castle’s peaceful grounds and many fine trees are home to a large variety of birds and animals.

To reach the castle you will cross the Tudor bridge which spans the dry moat. This was built to replace the drawbridge by the 13th Earl of Oxford in 1496. The Inner Bailey, the grassy area around the castle, provides a natural amphitheatre for spectators to watch the jousting and other events held during the summer months.

With ample free parking and a tranquil lakeside picnic area, you will be sure to enjoy your visit.

Another one of the popular Essex Tourist Attractions is the national award winning Mountfitchet Castle; a unique all-weather, all-in-one heritage entertainment complex where prehistory, history and nostalgia combine to make one great and exciting day out for the whole family.

Of all the buildings within the Castle, the prison was paid least attention to in terms of comfort. Here you will see the prison thatched in long wheat straw, with the walls made of half-round oak trunks with large cracks, making it very draughty. Other buildings would have been plastered to keep out the wind, but as it was a prison, this was not deemed necessary.

Also to be found within the 10 acre site is the Toy Museum which is the largest in the world with at least 80,000 exhibits on display from late Victorian times.

The Castle Tea Room offers a range of hot and cold food and refreshments throughout the day and Picnics can be enjoyed in the covered area outside the shop. The Shop has recently been extended to include improved access for wheelchairs and pushchairs through a new ramped entrance.

The Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker is surely one of the Essex Tourist Attractions not to be missed. Situated off the A128 in Kelvedon Hatch, you will find the Bunker steeped in history.

Originally built as an RAF ROTOR Station, the Bunker was then used as a Civil Defence Centre before becoming a Regional Government Head Quarters. It is now a major attraction in our county and can also be hired for various events.

The tour, which could last between one and two hours, is suitable for adults and children, and gives a wonderful insight into the history of this facility.

These are just three of the many Essex Tourist Attractions waiting to be explored. Come and see for yourself what else our historic county has to offer.
